By car
Southcombe Barn is located in Widecombe in the Moor a 15-minute drive from the A38 and Ashburton.

As you enter Widecombe in the Moor village, drive through and there will be a school on your right. Continue for about 100 metres and then take the first right after the school signposted ‘Southcombe’. Drive about another 250 metres up the steep hill, ignore the first drive on your left. Another 30 metres on and it’s the L shaped barn, behind the house on the left. Park up just past the gate with Southcombe Barn sign.

By public transport
The nearest train station is Newton Abbot, only a 30-minute drive. There’s also a train station in Totnes, a similar distance away.

A very special and immersive performance on Saturd

A very special and immersive performance on Saturday night of a River That Never Rests Iteration II by @ashantihare - a ritual performance that explores the river as a sentient being, in the artist’s words, revealing its story as ‘the observer of the land and guardian of passing over.

This piece was part of the Invasion Ecology season of contemporary land art on Dartmoor, started on residency @southcombebarn and commissioned by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (@laragoodband @rammuseum ) in Exeter - Hare’s performance is inspired by objects in the museum’s collection. Hare was particularly drawn to the Minkisi or Nkisi, healing figures or power bundles from the Congo, as well as objects found and collected in Exeter. The Minkisi were collected by Richard Edward Dennett (1857-1921), an English trader in the Lower Congo, during the time European powers began to colonise the Congo basin.

Hare draws on African and Norse mythologies where water is revealed as a bridge between worlds and represents the cyclical nature of grief; death and rebirth; joy and celebration. For Hare, water also becomes a ‘symbol for the transatlantic slave trade.’

Hare’s ceremonial garb is on display Thursday - Sunday 11-3pm until Aug 10 as part of our Invasion Ecology group show at Southcombe Barn in collaboration with @radicalecology - For this iteration, Ashanti carved a Minkisi from wood collected on Dartmoor and incorporated herbs from Southcombe Barn’s apothecary garden.

We are open 10-3pm this Saturday and Sunday, offering herbal brews and refreshments; mint, lemon verbena, nettle and dandelion tea from the apothecary garden, as well as elderflower cordials and elderberry cream teas as part of the @nationalgardenscheme - all Pay As You Feel donations will go back into the apothecary garden for sessions here with friends @refugeesupportdevon and Totnes Beyond Borders.

The gallery will be open alongside for Invasion Ecology, a new exhibition discussing the theme of belonging through our gardens.

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us for the opening of Invasion Ecology on Saturday. Special thanks to @Creamosicecream and @weareJabulani for the delicious food, @hanna_tuulikki for a beautiful opening performance and to all the artists @imandatoo @fernleighalbert @pollardingrid @ashishghadiali @ashantihare for making this exhibition happen. Invasion Ecology is a collaboration between Radical Ecology and Southcombe Barn and will be on display at Southcombe until 10 Aug.

Southcombe gardens will also be open as part of the @nationalgardenscheme for dates in June.

Join us at Southcombe Barn this Saturday 1 June from 11-3pm to celebrate the opening of Invasion Ecology - a group exhibition that questions what we mean by ‘native’ and what it means to belong - reimagining more empathic connections between humans, plants, animals and landscapes.

Artists include Ingrid Pollard, Iman Datoo, Hanna Tuulikki, Ashish Ghadiali, Fern Leigh Albert and Ashanti Hare, with works spanning installation, performance, moving image and photography.

Alongside the exhibition you can enjoy the gardens at Southcombe Barn and food will be available to buy from @wearejabulani and @creamosicecream.

Opening times: Thurs, Fri 10-3pm/Sat, Sun 11-3pm.
The exhibition is on view until 10 August 2024.

Our upcoming solo exhibition ‘Wild Campers’ by

Our upcoming solo exhibition ‘Wild Campers’ by Fern Leigh Albert follows a group of land rights protesters who in 2023 battled to reclaim the right to wild camp on Dartmoor.

Under the banner of ‘The Stars Are For Everyone’ the campaign captured the hearts and minds of people up and down the country who either had connections to Dartmoor or just craved greater access to the countryside.

The documentary series chronicles the actions of protesters from Stall Moor to the High Court, standing up for their right to roam.

This exhibition is part of a season of contemporary land art co-presented with @radicalecology at Southcombe Barn titled; ‘Invasion Ecology’ which questions what we mean by ‘native’ and what it means to belong - reimagining more empathic connections between humans, plants, animals and landscapes.

@fernleighalbert is an artist and photographer living on Dartmoor. Her work is largely concerned with the land and low-impact living.

This exhibition will show at Southcombe Barn from May 11- May 25
